A practical, interactive and collaborative half-day training session for frontline staff, volunteers and managers, which explores:

  • The increased vulnerabilities & risks of harm for Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)
  • Policies, procedures &  day-to-day good practice for safeguarding their wellbeing
  • Preventative approaches, including how & where to find appropriate support to meet their needs

Target audience

Frontline staff, volunteers and managers in any organisation which works with children and young people with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) and their families.

Aims

  • To raise awareness of the increased vulnerabilities & risks of harm for Children and Young People with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND)
  • To provide information on how and where to find appropriate support to meet their needs, and/or those of their families, which may help to prevent issues and risks from escalating
  • To offer practical suggestions on how to embed robust and effective safeguarding policies and procedures, which will enable safe  day-to-day practice within organisations which support them

Content

This training can be tailored to the specific needs of your organisation.

 Sessions will usually include:

  • Effective support for children and young people with SEND, and their families, and where to find additional/specialist support when they need it
  • Safeguarding children with disabilities, and understanding the increased risks and vulnerabilities which may arise
  • Scenarios and responses - including working with other agencies
  • Issues and challenges
  • Policies, procedures and enabling  good practice in safeguarding
    • What’s needed, and what’s missing?
    • Audit & review

Scope of training

This was developed initially in response to a request from Essex Safeguarding Children Board for training which met the aims outlined above.

It is intended to augment the core Safeguarding Children training, which should be undertaken by all frontline staff and volunteers at an appropriate level, and should not be regarded as a replacement for that core training.

It is recommended that all participants should have undertaken at least Level 1 Safeguarding Children training before they attend this session.
